An elderly woman was looted at knife point by a miscreant reportedly after her domestic help opened the door for the caretaker of the house to take water. Police have detained two persons in connection with the heist.

The incident happened in the heart of the city, at a house located on CR Avenue in north Kolkata, on Thursday night.

The woman had been bed-ridden and incapable of walking for quite some time due to her femur bone fracture bore the brunt of the alleged heist. The police identified the woman as Madumitra Mitra. She was allegedly looted on knife point of Rs 15 lakh in cash and valuables worth several lakhs.

City police sources said that the alleged incident happened last night allegedly after the domestic help had opened the door for the caretaker of the house, who had asked for water.

The alleged miscreant, claimed police sources, entered the house taking advantage of the opened door and went straight to the elderly woman’s room brandishing a knife and looted cash and ornaments after overpowering her.

Burtolla police, who launched an investigation, detained the caretaker, who entered into the house to take water and the domestic help, who had opened the door for the former.

Sources at the detective department of Kolkata Police claimed that the heist could not have been possible without any insider’s involvement.

“We have started an inquiry to unlock the puzzle regarding the entire operation. There are certain missing links, which have to be bridged to unravel the mystery. For which we are taking help of CCTV cameras to ascertain the number of miscreants and chronology to crack the crime,” said a senior officer without elaborating further.

Meanwhile, the local Trinamul Congress councillor of ward 26 Taraknath Chatterjee attributed the crime to alleged police inaction, saying, “The entire area at Central Avenue after midnight remains under the grip of anti-social elements, who roam freely and indulge in criminal activities, while the police presence remains negligible. I’ve apprised the local Burtolla police station a number of times and even wrote to the DC (North) but nothing worthwhile has happened so far.”
