Some south Bengal districts like Bankura and East Burdwan have witnessed remarkable population growth, besides increase in number of voters, compared to the number of deletions from the list. East Burdwan district that accommodates two Parliamentary seats (East Burdwan and Burdwan Durgapur) has recorded a significant hike of new voters.
It has also deleted a substantial volume of ghost voters after the 2021 Assembly election. The district of Bankura that too shares two Parliamentary seats (Bankura and Bishnupur) has witnessed 64,698 new voters. The district that had 29.82 lakh voters during the 2021 Assembly elections, now has recorded a figure of 30.09 lakh valid voters. The district currently has 14.72 lakh female voters.
Both of the Lok Sabha seats Bankura and Bishnupur in the last general election in 2019 had elected Subhas Sarkar and Soumitra Khan as the MPs from the BJP. East Burdwan has witnessed a 2.48 per cent hike in enrolment of new voters, which in figure counts 97,458 voters against total number of 41.38 lakh voters. The district has deleted names of 66, 819 voters. Besides, names of 40,503 voters have been rectified and in gross, 85,308 names have been added into the voter’s lists, the officials said.
The district, after special summary revisions, has recorded 20,46,678 female voters against 20,91,064 total male voters. “The district also has 87 of transgender voters,” said Pradipta Das, the district election officer for East Burdwan. Out of two seats, the district had elected Surinder Singh Ahluwalia as its MP from the BJP for the Burdwan Durgapur seat and Sunil Mondal as the MP from the Trinamul Congress for the East Burdwan seat. Mondal, though had migrated to the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly election.
