Covid: Govt dedicates 3,718 beds in state-run hospitals

In view of the apprehension of a rise in Covid cases, state government today stressed on increasing testing, infrastructure and vaccin ation for combating the situation. The state government will not impose any strict Covid measures or norms immediately but the health department has been asked to keep a check on Covid patients This was decided at a meeting held by state chief secretary HK Dwivedi with district magistrates and health officials at Nabanna to take stock of the pandemic situation in West Bengal.

To begin with, 3718 Covid beds have already been kept aside in all the hospitals along with arranging the necessary infrastructure. Hospitals lacking the requisite infrastructure have been directed to set up separate Covid wards and seek help from the PWD.

The hospitals have been asked to arrange adequate number of beds keeping in view the number of serious and very serious patients who may need those. People having breathing problems have to be given additional attention. Mr Dwivedi has asked to increase testing. People with Covid-like symptoms should go for testing immediately and hospitals have been asked to arrange rapid antigen test kits and RT-PCR facilities. All samples have to be sent for genome sequencing.

Necessary monitoring has to be done at the airport. Deliberating on Covid vaccination, officials said that booster doses could be given to around 26 per cent people so there is a huge requirement for booster doses. Mr Dwivedi said that the state government will urge the Centre for providing more booster doses. A letter in this regard is also being sent to Delhi. Along with this, a fresh awareness will be gen erated for people to get vaccinated.
