Kolkata Police will slap a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first time offenders, and Rs 10,000 on subsequently, who are caught using earphones or mobile phones while driving.
Traffic sergeants have been posted in different areas and they are often found to be patrolling to spot the offenders.
A senior police officer said many owner drivers have a tendency to use earphones and mobile phones or talk on mobile phones on Maa flyover, Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and areas surrounding BBD Bag.
The officer said it is always risky to use a cellphone while driving.
The police have requested the drivers not to use cellphones while driving, but it yielded lukewarm response. Once caught, the errant driver will have to pay the fine.
Drivers particularly those on two wheelers are found to violate the stop line in such cases a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for the first time and it will go up to Rs 1,500 subsequently. The police will impose a fine of Rs 5,000 if a person below the age of 16- 18 years is caught riding a motorcycle.
Anyone using dazzling headlights will be fined Rs 500 for the first time and Rs 1,500 subsequently. If a driver is caught driving the vehicle dangerously, will be fined Rs 5,000 for the first time and Rs 10,000 for subsequent mistakes.
Taking part in a race or trial of speed of any kind at any public place will be fined Rs 5,000 which will go up to Rs 10,000 subsequently.
If a driver is caught changing the lane without signal will be fined Rs 500 for the first time and Rs 1,500 subsequently. A senior officer said chief minister Mamata Banerjee had given specific instructions that no one who flouted traffic rules be spared.
“The police are trying its best to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and fines would be imposed on the errant owners.
