Pandemonium reigned supreme in the Assembly after the BJP legislators, headed by the Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari started shouting slogans and tore apart copies of the Governor’s address. The Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs also disrupted the address of the governor CV Ananda Bose on the opening day of the Budget Session, which got underway today.

The House, which was also attended by the chief minister Mamata Banerjee, just two minutes into the session of the Governor’s address starting at 2pm, the BJP legislators, headed by Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition shouted slogans “chor dhoro jail bhoro”, “Governor shame, shame” and even hurled a sheave of papers from the copies of the Governor’s address torn apart creating uproar and disrupted the Governor’s address and staged a walkout midway.

Governor Bose, whose laudatory speech on the chief minister Mamata Banerjee on the other day at St Xaviers’ college invited ire from the oppositions parties, particularly the BJP, today wasted no time in flagging protest just after the House got underway to discuss the Budget session after the Governor started his address heaping praise on the government’s performance.

Bose today showered praises on the government’s role in maintaining law and order, and its role in pandemic. Besides, he also heaped praise on the rolling out of various flagship schemes, including “Krishak Bandhu” “Khadya Sathi”, “Kanyashree” and Paray Samadhan to name a few.

Sovandeb Chatterjee, the state parliamentary affairs minister, when asked to comment on the BJP’s role in the House and its walkout later, said, “The role of the BJP in the House was below standard and detestable. It was an outcome of their utter frustration. The ruckus the BJP legislators created in the House today was smacked of their political bankruptcy.”

Mr Adhikari while addressing a press conference said that the Governor was being “misled” by the ruling dispensation and should we be given scope to speak on the 10th and 13th of February on the Governor’s address, we would definitely prove the Governor’s address, which is basically a prepared text of the government, wrong by presenting facts and detailed information.
