Taking note of the unruly behavior by a section of lawyers in Calcutta High Court and the daring act of pasting posters around the house of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, the Bar Council of India has taken cognizance of the matter. The Bar Council of India had in a resolution decided to send a delegation of three members as a fact-finding team to compile report based on their visit to the Calcutta High Court.

The ruckus at Calcutta High Court, resorted to by a section of lawyers holding the court of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha to ransom in connection with his alleged bias towards the leader of the Opposition and Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari and the simultaneous poster blitz around his south Kolkata residence allegedly by some unidentified persons, who are still to be arrested, has prompted the council to take such a measure.

Irked by a this alleged turn of events, where the court of a justice of his stature of the Calcutta High Court had come under threat by a section of the lawyers, who not only tried to intimidate the judge in a mala fide campaign by putting up posters to smear his image but also boycotted the proceedings in the former’s court in an alleged flexing of muscles, the Bar Council delegation has been tasked with the job to prepare to compile a report based on their visit to the Calcutta High Court, where the team, as sources put it, will call on the register general of the high court and meet the president, vice-president, secretary of the High Court Bar Association and prepare a report.

Meanwhile, the bar association, which had called off its demonstration following assurance to the Justice Mantha, who had issued a suomotu ruling on contempt of court against the erring lawyers and sent it to the chief Justice Prakash Srivastava for his consideration, continued with its boycott of Justice Mantha’s court even today as the Advocate General claimed that there was hardly any official instruction not to join the proceedings at the court of Justice Mantha as he himself was attending the proceedings in a number of cases but made it clear that it was not possible for him to know on why the other government counsels were conspicuous by their absence in the proceedings held in the court of Justice Mantha. .
