The Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) has prepared a list of unauthorized constructions besides the Garui river and will send notices for demolitions soon, while the detailed project report (DPR) of Rs 12 crore for restoration of the rivulet has already been finalised.

Bidhan Upadhyay, mayor of Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) has informed that during the heavy monsoon season the flash floods occur after Garui rivulet overflows due to illegal encroachments on the banks and siltation in Asansol North area since the past few years.

“This year too three persons have been killed in the floods, including an ex servicemen and top official of BEML, who was returning home driving his SUV, when he was swept away by the currents in Kalyanpur area, all due to overflowing of the Garui and Nunia rivulets. Locals have complained about illegal encroachments and the officials of AMC visited and inspected the area and prepared a list. Notices will be issued shortly,” added Bidhan Upadhyay.

A large part of the Asansol town has been marooned during the flash floods last month, mostly in the northern part of the city. The detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared and the Rs 12 crore will be sent to the state municipal and urban development department for final approval.

Meanwhile, the civic body has undertaken projects to cleanse the Garui rivulet banks from Shristi Nagar to Kalyanpur township with its own resources. “We will erect iron railings on the banks of the Garui rivulet so that people don’t litter,” the mayor said.

The Asansol Municipal Corporation in its MIC and borough chairmen meeting has finalised tender work of Rs 6 crore for repairing of the roads before the Durga Puja.

The mayor said that due to the underground cable laying work of WBSEDCL, a World Bank funded project, in many parts of the city, roads have been dug up in the areas like Mohishila Road, KT Road, Dhadka Road, S B Gorai Road, N S Road, Nuruddin Road and Okay Road. These will be temporarily repaired for the Durga Puja and the final repair work will begin after the Kali Puja. In Raniganj too, four roads will be repaired.

The tendering work has been completed and within a couple of days the repairing job will start and finish before the Durga Puja. The street lights will also be repaired where they are in defunct condition.
