Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Sashi Tharoor said here on Monday that founder leader of the Nair Service Society (NSS) Mannath Padmanabhan said had years ago that a Nair can’t tolerate another Nair and that he was experiencing it in politics even today,
Speaking at the 146th Jayanthi celebrations of Mannath Padmanabhan, the founding leader of the NSS, Tharoor said, “Mannam, (as Mannath Padmanabhan is fondly called by his followers), said that 80 years ago, but I still feel it in politics.”
The NSS, on Monday, gave a rousing reception to Tharoor who came to inaugurate the 146th Jayanthi celebrations of Mannath Padmanabhan, the founding leader of the organisation at Perunna in Changanassery.
Welcoming Tharoor to the function at Perunna, NSS General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair said he would like to correct his earlier statement terming Tharoor a “Delhi Nair”.
“I said Tharoor was a Delhi Nair. This is an opportunity to correct that mistake. Shashi Tharoor is not a Delhi Nair. He is a son of Kerala. He is a global citizen,” Nair said, adding that there was no one else worthy as Tharoor to inaugurate the Mannam Jayanthi celebrations.
It was in 2007 that Sukumaran Nair made the controversial statement when Congress first fielded Tharoor in the Lok Sabha elections in Thiruvananthapuram.
Shashi Tharoor said that he was happy to be able to speak on a platform where so many great people have spoken. Mannam did things in his life that are still influential.
No senior Congress leader other than Tharoor was invited to today’s function .Ten years ago AK Antony participated in the Mannam Jayanti conference. After that, this is the first time that NSS has invited a Congress leader to the Mannam Jayanti conference.
G Sukumaran Nair has been estranged from opposition leader VD Satheesan after he (Satheesan) made a statement that he did not win because of the support of any community organisation.
