Smith became South Africa’s youngest captain at 22 and played as many as 117 Tests for South Africa in which he accumulated 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25.

Graeme Smith, Tim May named honorary life members of MCC

Former South Africa cricket captain Graeme Smith has been awarded honorary life membership of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for his splendid achievements in the game of cricket.

Smith became South Africa’s youngest captain at 22 and played as many as 117 Tests for the Proteas in which he accumulated 9,265 runs at an average of 48.25. He also has to his credit 27 Test centuries and 38 half-centuries in his Test match career. In the list of South Africa’s highest run-getters, Smith is placed at the third position.

Notably, Graeme was named as one of the Wisden Cricket Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 2004. Apart from his splendid record in Test matches as captain and player, he was also a match-winner in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He scored 6989 runs at an average of 37.98 in the ODIs which included 10 centuries and 47 half-centuries.

Along with Graeme Smith, former Aussie spin bowler Tima May has also been given the honorary life membership with MCC. The duo followed the likes of Paul Collingwood, AB de Villiers, Mitchell Johnson and Adrian Morgan in being awarded the honour in 2019.
