German Ambassador to India Walter J Lindner presented his credentials to President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday morning.
Lindner then spoke to reporters near the India Gate where he batted for India’s permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
But it was neither the presentation of his credentials nor his backing of India’s UNSC seat that attracted the attention of social media users. It was a car – the one that he drove to the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan where a fleet of German-made BMWs and Mercedes can be found parked on the sprawling grounds.

There were two reasons why Lindner’s car drew attention to itself: One, it was an Ambassador, and, two, it was of bright red colour.
While the German ambassador spoke to the media, Twitter users could not stop themselves from expressing their love for the car.

A German ambassador in a bright red ambassador with a German flag on it on the streets of New Delhi is indeed a sight to behold.
Even Lindner knew that his car will grab eyeballs.
“Today pesented credentials as German Ambassador to the President of India, H.E. Ram Nath Kovind. Using Hindi to do it brought a smile on the President‘s face, as did our red Amby waving the German flag to countless Delhiwallas on the streets leading to the Presidential Palace [sic],” he tweeted.
“Leaving presidential palace in New Delhi today after presenting credentials to President of India, H.E. Ram Nath Kovind. Our Indien icon „Amby“ car waiting outside, observed slightly enviously by a fleet of German BMWs, Mercedes…[sic]” he wrote in another tweet, with a video of him getting into the Ambassador.

Lindner had on Monday revealed that he will drive to the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the red Ambassador.
“Tomorrow presenting credentials as GermAmb to President of India, H.E. Ram Nath Kovind. And yes, have opted to leave our BMWs, Mercedes and Audis in garage, instead we‘ll be using our iconic „Auntie Amby“, the Ambassador, first car-model built in India (1958). With German flag!” he tweeted.

Speaking to reporters today, Lindner said that it is unheard of that a nation with 1.4 billion people is not yet a permanent member of the UNSC.
“India must have a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. India with 1.4 billion people is not yet a permanent member, this is unheard of. This can’t go on like this because it hurts the credibility of the United Nations system,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.
India is at the forefront of efforts at the UN to push for the long-pending reform of the Security Council, emphasising that it rightly deserves a place at the UN high table as a permanent member.
Earlier this month, France’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Francois Delattre, had batted for the inclusion of India as a permanent member of the council.
