Australian speedster Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the upcoming one-day international series against India due to injury. Cricket Australia said on Thursday Starc sustained a pectoral muscle injury during the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia.

Kane Richardson has been included in Australian squad in place of Starc.
“Unfortunately, scans have revealed that Mitchell Starc sustained a substantial tear to his left pec muscle while bowling on the final day of the Test match in Canberra,” CA selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement.

“This means he will be unavailable for the tour of India, but we will instead target a return to play for the ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE in March,” he added.

Starc’s absence means Australia will come to India short of fast bowling experience, as his fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood was earlier sidelined due to injury.

Australian paceman Pat Cummins has been promoted to vice-captain in Hazlewood’s absence. Aaron Finch would lead the Australian team in the upcoming limited overs series.

“Kane not only has experience playing ODI cricket for Australia, but he’s also performed well for his country when given the opportunity,” said Hohns.

Australia’s squad:

Aaron Finch (captain), Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Turner, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Lyon, Adam Zampa, D’Arcy Short.
