The identity certificate of the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, issued by India, is invalid now that he holds a Dominican passport, it is learnt.
The Karmapa, who has been living in the US since May 2017, has not informed the Indian authorities that he now holds the Dominican passport.
Sources explained that the identity certificate, issued to stateless citizens, gets automatically cancelled once an individual secures a foreign passport. India was, however, ready to give him a visa to come and reside in the country.
Karmapa, who is the head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism, was expected to come to India to attend the 13th religious conference on Tibetan Buddhism at Dharamshala in November. The conference was, however, postponed due to the death of Kathok Getse Rinpoche, head of the Nyingna Council.
Sources said India did not recognise Dorje as 17th Karmapa.
