Sandeep Patil, who is a former selection panel chief, has slammed the recent selection policies of Indian cricket team. Former Indian cricketer feels that dropping players from the Indian squad on the basis of Yo-Yo test after having already selected is absurd.
“Look, I am not against fitness being a criteria,” Patil told Mid-day, adding “…But I find it very absurd that a player is dropped for failing the Yo-Yo test after he has been picked in the squad. In this way, you are disturbing the balance of the team; you are playing with the career of a cricketer,” he added.
Earlier, pacer Mohammed Shami, batsmen Ambati Rayudu and Sanju Samson were dropped from Indian squad after they were unable to clear the Yo-Yo test.
Patil also questioned whether ‘the trainer has become selector’ as players were dropped on the basis on the fitness test.
“The toughest competition is T20 cricket and throughout the tournament (Indian Premier League) the players have not suffered any problems,” Patil said, adding, “Suddenly, they are out. What I also find absurd and wrong is that the trainer will decide on these matters. Has the trainer become a selector?” he exclaimed.
Earlier, Hyderabad Cricket Association secretary, T Sheshnarayan had slammed the disqualification of Ambati Rayudu from the Indian squad on the basis of Yo-Yo test.
“This looks very lopsided and deep-rooted. Since a person who got nearly the highest runs in IPL this year and has also played all the 50-over games in the domestic season, he now finds himself unfit on some highly overrated fitness test. How can an unfit person score so many runs?” HCA secretary was quoted saying by Deccan Chronicle.
