Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, visited various under-construction sites such as hospitals and water treatment plants in Varanasi, five days after 18 people were killed in a under-construction flyover collapse.

According to various media reports, Adityanath visited the ESI hospital and asked the authorities to complete the construction work by December 2018.

Other than the hospital, he also inspected the condition of the 100 MLD Water Treatment Plant in Sarnath. After completion, the plant is expected to provide clean water to over 7.27-lakh people.

The CM’s visit to inspect various under-construction projects has come in wake of shocking collapse of the under-construction flyover on 15 May.

He had earlier ordered proceedings for strict penal action against former Managing Director of UP Bridge Corporation Rajan Mittal and six others in connection with the Varanasi flyover collapse.

A portion of a flyover being built by a state-run corporation collapsed on a busy road in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, killing at least 18 people as it crushed a mini bus, cars and two-wheelers.

The chief minister gave these orders after a three-member team constituted to probe the lapses leading to the collapse, submitted its report, a senior government official said.

Besides Mittal, action has been ordered against chief project manager HC Tewari, project manager KR Sudan, assistant engineer Rajesh Singh, engineer Lal Chand, former project manager Genda Lal and additional project manager Rajesh Pal, he said, adding four of them have already been placed under suspension.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of those killed in the Varanasi flyover collapse incident. He also announced Rs 50,000 each to those seriously injured in the incident, an official statement said.

Modi represents Varanasi in the Lok Sabha.
