Early morning rains lashed Chandigarh and surrounding areas on Monday even as authorities in Haryana and Punjab remained on high alert following a storm advisory issued by the Met department.
Schools in Haryana have been ordered to remain closed for two days (Monday and Tuesday) as a preventive measure in view of the weather warning.
A few private schools in Chandigarh also announced closure for two days.

The maximum temperatures at most places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh remained between 31.5 and 38.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday with rainfall at some places and overcast sky at several others.
The Met office has predicted thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds and rain, in Haryana and Punjab from Monday to Wednesday.
The Met office said Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan were also likely to be hit by another dust storm due to cyclonic circulation formation in the region.
According to the warning of the meteorological department, dust storm, rainfall or thunderstorm may occur at areas like Bikaner, Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Karauli, Jhunjhunu, Swai Madhopur, Sikar, Sriganganagar and Jaisalmer districts.
At least 27 people were dead and over 100 injured as a high-intensity squall followed by thundershowers and duststorm hit Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur and Jaipur districts of north-eastern Rajasthan last week.
The storm also ravaged parts of western Uttar Pradesh. According to an official, 64 people lost their lives and 30 people were injured as the squall hit the region last night.
